BECOME A VOLUNTEER!
Most of the staff you see on the W&L are volunteers giving their time to help run the railway. Anybody can join in with this in one way or another, from driving the engines, tending the track, painting the carriages and looking after the shop to designing and writing the posters and publicity! We couldn’t run without volunteers; they are the breath of life for the line. If we didn’t have our supporters then we wouldn’t be able to keep going!
Most jobs are done by people in their spare time, who have learned to work as railway professionals for the sheer fun and challenge of it. Training is given to newcomers from people who are pleased to teach them. The standards are high with a quality of service and safety second to none. Jobs are available for people who wish to visit for just a few days to every week of the year.
Volunteers have been involved in everything to do with the restoration of the line which has been a massive undertaking. The work has involved refurbishing track, building new stations and workshops plus rescuing and rebuilding rolling stock from distant parts of the world. The happy ending to the story is that, as well as having a delightful railway; the volunteers get such enjoyment from their association with the line.
(Volunteering is open to men and women aged 16 or over. Some operating duties, where safety performance criteria apply, may not be appropriate for people with impairments).
